The term "jade" encompasses two distinct minerals: jadeite and nephrite. Although similar, these materials possess distinct properties that affect their value and use.
In Australia, nephrite is more commonly referred to as New Zealand Greenstone or Pounamu.
Jadeite pieces are very tough and exceptionally durable for jewellery use. Although nephrite has more resistance to breaking, jadeite typically possesses a higher Mohs hardness rating that effectively resists scratching.
